In early 18th-century English society, social mobility allowed families to signify their rising status through the display of exceptional silver on their dining tables. The Rococo style, with its whimsical and elaborate designs, was particularly suited to this purpose. These remarkable candlesticks exemplify the Rococo style with their asymmetrical and playful features. Long-cheeked, pouting putti reminiscent of those in Blaise Gentot's armorial designs are intricately wrapped around the shafts, their dimpled arms gripping delicate shells. Below their soft, rounded forms, cloth drapes elegantly into leaves and scrolls, while shells form skirts at the ankles. The bases of each candlestick burst into a lavish display of flowers, scrolls and lion faces, all rendered with a distinctive, flattened perspective.
The candlesticks also feature removable nozzles for cleaning out hardened wax, a practical design choice given the lush foliage repousséed on the wax pans. Unlike most candlesticks of the period, which were typically cast, the bases of these Sieber candlesticks were innovatively raised from a flat sheet of silver, shaped into a wooden swage and then chased on the exterior. Ernest Sieber, who had only recently registered his mark the year before producing these masterful candlesticks, demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship in their creation. Additionally, these candlesticks were also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
