Hallmarked London, 1824
This exquisite pair of silver candlesticks, marked by Joseph Craddock and William Ker Reid, was crafted in London during the reign of George IV. At a time when candlelight was essential for late dinners, candlesticks like these were both practical and highly decorative. The elegant floral, scroll, rocaille and acanthus leaf motifs reflect the opulence of Georgian design, while their solid weight and broad feet ensured stability—a crucial consideration when fire was the primary source of light.
Every surface of these candlesticks is adorned with intricate decoration, from the finely chased removable bobeches to the elaborate detailing on the stems and bases. The impressive balance of form and function speaks to the skill of their makers and the period's demand for both beauty and practicality in everyday objects. These ornate candlesticks were also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
This pair represents a final collaboration between Craddock and Reid, as their partnership ended in 1825. William Ker Reid, a member of the prominent Reid goldsmithing family in Newcastle, chose to establish his own workshop in London. His independent career in the capital contributed to his legacy as one of the most respected silversmiths of his time.
