Percussion Cane Gun
Circa 1890

This intricately crafted percussion cane gun, circa 1890, serves as both a walking cane and a discreet firearm. The single-shot design allows for simple and effective functionality. The .45 caliber barrel is intended for use with a .410 caliber cartridge, this rare smoothbore cane showcases a sophisticated construction typical of high-quality firearms of the period. The shotgun's European proof mark, featuring a crown over crossed scepters and a small "V," points to its proofing by the Birmingham Proof House in the late 19th century, and the base is etched "H. Jacobs." The cane also includes a skeletal wooden shoulder stock that locks into place using a collar and pin mechanism.

Visually, the gun retains much of its original character, exhibiting a rich patina. The thumb-operated textured button easily opens the breech, and the L-shaped steel-reinforced wooden handle, with its hand-worn finish, transforms into a functional grip when firing. The accompanying shoulder stock is also wooden and the metal ferrule is held by a pin.
