Silver Salt Cellar
Robert Garrard
Hallmarked London, 1811

This exceptional Regency sterling silver salt cellar, crafted by renowned silversmith Robert Garrard, exemplifies the refined elegance and meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with the dining traditions of the era. The master salt features intricate lion masks adorned with floral motifs and rests on three graceful paw feet. In the 18th century, when salt was both rare and highly prized, open salt cellars like this served not only as functional tableware but also as opulent displays of wealth and status. The design is marked with the symbol of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a prestigious British order of chivalry established in 1725. The Order’s Latin motto, Tria juncta in uno (“Three joined in one”), references either the union of England, Scotland and Ireland or the Holy Trinity. The German motto Ich dien (“I serve”)—used by members of the Order’s military division—also appears on the vessel, linking this exquisite salt cellar to a legacy of military excellence and honor.

In 1802, Robert Garrard I took control of the silver firm started by John Wickes, establishing a dynasty that would become Garrard & Co., renowned as Crown Jewelers to the English court. Appointed Royal Goldsmiths, Jewelers and Official Crown Jewelers in 1843 following the decline of Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the firm became synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and royal commissions. Garrard created notable commissions for the royal family, including Queen Mary’s coronation crown in 1911. During the mid-19th century, the firm was celebrated as the leading producer of presentation silver, reflecting the pinnacle of Victorian luxury. This salt cellar from Robert Garrard was also a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
