This exceptional pietre dure table was specially made for the Royal Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Delicately inlaid with dozens of rare hardstones and set on its parcel-gilt walnut base, the impeccable craftsmanship and striking design of the table display a beautiful richness befitting of its royal provenance.

The base of the table bears several royal stamps, confirming its commission during Queen Victoria’s reign and its continued use during George V’s at Holyroodhouse Palace. Standing at the base of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Holyroodhouse has been the all-important and principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century, and British monarchs still today spend weeks in residence there every year. Holyroodhouse has also been host to various legendary historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots and the Comte d’Artois, the exiled brother of Louis XVI of France, to whom George III offered the palace in the aftermath of the French Revolution.

With such an important origin, it is obvious why this table has such a magnificent design. The rich black hue of the pietre dure top is complemented by an elegant floral motif, crafted from an array of precious hardstones such as lapis lazuli, Blue John, malachite, turquoise and amethyst. Given that the Royal Collection typically commissioned decorative pieces from leading craftsmen of the time, this table’s stunning stone top was likely crafted by Thomas Woodruff, Queen Victoria’s official stone inlayer, and the marvelously carved and gilded walnut base by the Queen’s favorite cabinetmaker, Holland & Sons. Combining unparalleled sophistication with royal provenance, this unique pietre dure table is steeped in historical significance and exudes timeless elegance and luxury.
