This magnificent sterling silver shovel was a unique gift presented to the Lord Mayor of Leicester to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee (60th Anniversary) of Queen Victoria's reign. Crafted by the renowned T & J Bragg, famed for their exquisite gold and silverwork, this shovel is a monumental work of ceremonial art.

The ebony handle contrasts beautifully with the gleaming silver, further adorned with the intricately engraved Leicester city crest. Unlike the traditional presentation shovel used for laying foundation stones, this commemorates a symbolic gesture, the planting of a tree or turning of the first sod, marking a new chapter for Leicester.

T & J Bragg, Birmingham silversmiths, were preeminent in the late 19th century and celebrated for the exceptional quality and artistry of their creations. Their works, often commissioned for significant events and dignitaries, are highly treasured today.
