This exquisite bronze okimono of a cockerel was conceived by the esteemed Japanese artist Takahashi Ryoun during the Meiji period (1868-1912). This period is celebrated for its extraordinary renaissance in Japanese bronze and metal sculpture, catalyzed by Japan's renewed engagement with the West. Artists of this era, including Ryoun, adeptly blended traditional metalworking practices with innovative approaches.

The cockerel, a young rooster, is a subject imbued with profound symbolism within Japanese culture, emblematic of courage, fidelity and the promise of good fortune. This okimono captures the essence of such symbolism through the young rooster’s poised stature and the meticulous articulation of its bronze feathers, further accentuated by the original red paint adorning its comb.

A distinguished alumnus of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Takahashi Ryoun’s mastery in bronze casting earned him the honor of a designated special member by the Tokyo Casting Association—a recognition reserved for artists of exceptional caliber. His contributions are preserved in the esteemed collection of the Museum of the Japanese Imperial Collections in Tokyo.

The term Okimono refers to ornamental objects crafted for display, akin to the French objet d’art. Originating in the early Meiji period, okimono embody the pinnacle of craftsmanship. With the cessation of Japan's isolationist policies, artisans, liberated from previous obligations, pursued creative endeavors with renewed vigor. Esteemed for their intricate designs and exceptional craftsmanship, okimono such as this one, depict a range of motifs from mythological narratives to auspicious animals, celebrating the zenith of artistic achievement during the Meiji period.
