Incredibly rare and visually stunning, this Steinway & Sons Grand Piano is considered the highest-quality concert piano of the 19th and 20th centuries. This particular instrument is further distinguished by its rare Model C and special art case, featuring beautifully detailed rosewood marquetry of the finest caliber.

While the majority of Steinways were housed in a more traditional and streamlined exterior case, this particular model features an incredibly rare and undoubtedly custom-crafted "art case." Crafted of the finest rosewood, the entire piano evokes a sophisticated Neoclassical style, inlaid with delicate marquetry depicting lifelike foliate motifs that weave around groupings of musical instruments. The piano rests upon classical column legs that echo the pedalboard design, and the music desk features an intricate arabesque cut-out design with a central lyre motif.

During the period between 1890-1930, Steinway was the instrument of choice for every major pianist in the world due to their superb tonal quality. Steinway only used the finest timber and applied the highest level of craftsmanship. This changed in 1930 after the Depression hit as Steinway, along with all other piano manufacturers, was forced to lower the quality of their materials. Our instrument was made circa 1900 at the height of Steinway's golden age, and it is a rare Model C that was first manufactured in 1878. William Steinway himself said of this special model: "This new Grand piano [is] the result of years of study and experiment... [It] is the grandest creation in power, sonority and sympathetic singing quality ever achieved in a Parlor Concert Grand."

Steinway's art case grand pianos such as this were each one-of-a-kind and custom-made, combining the firm's incomparable craftsmanship with inspired designs. Today they are highly rare and can be found in prestigious collections including at the White House and the Smithsonian.
