When discovered in the hills of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1967, tanzanites were first thought to be an alternative type of sapphire. Upon further investigation, however, the stone’s properties were seen to be more complex and unique. The stone was christened with the name “Tanzanite” by Henry B. Platt, president and chairman of Tiffany & Co., at the 1968 World's Fair, where its vibrant blue-violet color dazzled visitors. While many tanzanites display a light, violet hue, examples such as this boasting a strong, pure blue hue are considered the most desirable and valuable.
