A magnificent blue tanzanite weighing an astonishing 88.00 carats and displaying its prized, highly-saturated violetish-blue hue is the focus of this captivating pendant necklace. Found in just one place on earth, the African country of Tanzania for which it is named, the tanzanite is relatively new to the jewel market. Its intense color is perfectly complemented by a halo of approximately 1.50 total carats of round, marquis and pear-shaped diamonds in its 18K white gold setting.

When discovered in the hills of Mount Kilimanjaro 1967, tanzanites were first thought to be an alternative type of sapphire. Upon further investigation, however, the stone’s properties were seen to be more complex and unique. The stone was christened with the name “Tanzanite” by Henry B. Platt, president and chairman of Tiffany & Co., at the 1968 World's Fair, where its vibrant blue-violet color dazzled visitors. While many tanzanites display a light, violet hue, examples such as this boasting a strong, pure blue hue are considered the most desirable and valuable.
