This sculpture was almost certainly commissioned by a French official to commemorate the centennial of American independence. It bears the marking CE 76, which typically signifies the Conseil d'État (Council of State) or Commission des Examens – French governmental bodies responsible for approving and cataloging public works, including sculptures. The marking suggests the bust was part of a public commission, exhibited at a state-sponsored event (such as the Paris Salon), or officially cataloged for administrative purposes in 1876, aligning with the centennial celebration.
Eugène Delaplanche was a celebrated French sculptor renowned for his refined naturalism and elegant craftsmanship. Born in Belleville, he studied under Francisque Duret and won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1864, spending several years at the Villa Medici in Rome. By 1878, Delaplanche had received the Medal of Honor at the Paris Salon, firmly establishing himself as one of the preeminent sculptors of his time. His works, distinguished by their classical grace and striking realism, can be found in prestigious institutions such as the Paris Opera House, the Musée d'Orsay, and the Glyptothek in Copenhagen.
