The Miraculous Draft of the Fishes

Oil on marble

The story of The Miraculous Draft of the Fishes comes to life in this stunning work of art executed on marble by the school of Italian Baroque artist Antonio Tempesta.  Such an exquisite composition, especially superior quality works from the 16th century, is an incredibly rare discovery for a collector of fine art.

The Miraculous Draft of the Fishes is a story taken from the Gospel of John wherein the disciples, busy fishing in the Sea of Galilee, suddenly hear the voice of the resurrected Christ calling to them from the shore. Having heard his voice, Saint Peter throws himself into the water and is seen here wading out of its depths at Christ's feet.

Antonio Tempesta was an Italian painter and engraver working during the Baroque era who was famed for painting on a variety of stones and minerals—a technique that was popular among aristocratic Italians of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Tempesta pioneered these new substrates for painting with great success, with his religious works in demand by a most illustrious clientele, including several popes and the Medici family. In fact, the present work was most likely a papal commission by Pope Pius XIII. Today his works are held in major museums worldwide, and a similar painting on marble titled The Death of Adonis is held by the Galleria Sabauda Museum in Turin, Italy.
