Royal Ascot Trophy
Joshua Vander
Hallmarked London, 1887

Royal Ascot stood at the summit of British sport in 1897, a year charged with national symbolism as Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. This monumental Coronation Stakes Cup, won by Leopold de Rothschild’s thoroughbred Goletta, represents a rare convergence of monarchy, elite racing and one of Europe’s most influential families. Objects of this stature from Ascot’s golden age are among the most coveted sporting trophies, seldom leaving institutional or private collections.

Executed in magnificent Victorian silver, the trophy is a tour de force of scale and craftsmanship. Rising over four feet high on its wooden base and weighing an extraordinary 614 troy ounces, it commands immediate presence. The stepped circular base is adorned with seated allegorical figures of Britannia, Scotland and Wales, above which a Romanesque column supports the vase-form cup. Medallions depict Queen Victoria at both her Coronation and her Diamond Jubilee, while the domed cover is crowned by a fully modeled finial of St. George slaying the dragon. Every surface reflects the grandeur and technical mastery characteristic of the finest late Victorian silver.

The trophy was crafted by the distinguished London silversmith Joshua Vander, bearing 1887 hallmarks and completed for presentation in 1897, its decade-long creation reflecting the exceptional intricacy of its design. Royal Ascot itself, founded by Queen Anne in 1711, had long served as a national stage for Britain’s most prestigious racing events. The Coronation Stakes, established to honor a reigning monarch, drew the finest thoroughbreds from elite stables, including that of Leopold de Rothschild, a leading racing patron of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. A victory by a Rothschild-owned horse at Ascot stands among the defining achievements of British sporting history.
