Circa 1890

One of the most sought-after and elusive of all skeleton clocks, this extraordinary timepiece operates with a rare triple fusee, or three-train, mechanism. Crafted by John McConnell of Belfast, who worked between 1880 and 1894, the clock represents a pinnacle of 19th-century horological design and engineering. Skeleton clocks are celebrated for exposing their internal workings, offering a mesmerizing display of precision and artistry.

The clock’s intricate framework is a thoughtful tribute to Westminster Abbey, molded from brass to echo the grandeur of this iconic landmark. Westminster Abbey, one of the most sought-after motifs in architectural skeleton clocks, has been the setting for the coronations of British monarchs since 1066, as well as royal weddings and burials. The silvered Roman numeral chapter ring and Gothic cathedral-style plates enhance its architectural elegance, reflecting the Abbey’s renowned design. This mechanism strikes the hour on a gong and chimes the quarters on a nest of eight bells, producing a rich and resonant chime. A two-jar mercury pendulum regulates the movement, ensuring precision to match its beauty.

Mounted on a white marble base and enclosed in a protective glass dome, this masterpiece marries form and function. McConnell's achievement in crafting a three-train skeleton clock solidifies his reputation as an exceptional artisan. Few skeleton clocks of this caliber exist, making this timepiece a testament to the heights of 19th-century craftsmanship.
