This Tiffany & Co. Chrysanthemum pattern silver butter pat was displayed at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, the first World’s Fair held in Chicago, where Tiffany & Co. presented an extravagant exhibition of silver, jewelry and luxury goods. “The Tiffany exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 was the greatest display of 19th-century American silver the world had ever seen,” said John Loring, former design director at Tiffany & Co. This butter pat, listed as number 479 in the Tiffany & Co. exhibition catalogue, exemplifies the firm’s excellence in silversmithing.
Framed by a wreath of chrysanthemum blossoms, the dish exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship that earned Tiffany & Co. acclaim at the exhibition. The coveted em>Chrysanthemum pattern was patented in 1880 by master silversmith Charles T. Grosjean, one of the most influential designers in Tiffany’s history. Though among the firm’s most expensive patterns to produce, it was highly sought after by Victorian socialites and new brides. As one of only seven butter plates displayed, this example represents one of Tiffany’s most intricate designs, underscoring the firm's success at the fair and its enduring legacy in American luxury.
During its six-month run, the World’s Columbian Exposition welcomed over 150,000 visitors, making it the most successful U.S. World Fair of its time. Spanning nearly 690 acres along Chicago’s lakefront, the fair’s centerpiece was a massive, electricity-powered Ferris wheel—then a marvel of modern engineering. More than a grand exhibition, the fair symbolized America’s growing industrial might and cultural influence at the dawn of the 20th century.
