Circa 1900

This shimmering cobalt blue Candlestick lamp is an extraordinary example of Tiffany’s iconic iridescent Favrile glass. The lamp’s elegant candlestick base, complete with a flange, neck and bobeche, echoes the delicate movement of the glass above, while the smooth, feathered stem provides a graceful connection with gilt-bronze details.

The shade’s iridescent sheen was achieved by spraying tin chloride onto hot cobalt glass, then reheating in a low-oxygen, reducing environment to produce a mirror-like finish inside and out. Tiffany’s glassmakers allowed the molten glass to take shape naturally, swinging it upside down on the blowpipe rather than using conventional crimping tools. The base features a mold-blown pattern of ten vertical ribs that twist elegantly from the flange to the bottom, complementing the fluidity and vibrancy of the shade.

Favrile, the trade name Louis Comfort Tiffany gave to his blown art glass, derives from the Latin fabrilis, meaning “made by hand.” Developed at Tiffany Furnaces in the mid-1890s, the technique incorporated filaments of differently colored glass worked while still molten. Tiffany Studios, under Louis Comfort Tiffany’s direction, revolutionized American decorative arts, elevating lamps and other functional objects into luminous works of art celebrated by collectors and museums worldwide.
