Working under austere conditions and guided by intuition rather than precedent, Barbosa’s perseverance culminated in 1987 with the discovery of a tourmaline unlike any previously known. Enriched by trace elements of copper and manganese, Paraiba tourmalines possess a radiant, internal glow that appears to illuminate the stone from within. Commercial production proved fleeting, with the vast majority of Brazilian output occurring between 1989 and 1992, further underscoring the scarcity of important examples today.
Certified by the American Gemological Laboratories as Brazilian origin with no evidence of heat treatment, this tourmaline’s importance is amplified by its size, provenance, and color purity.
