The remarkable vase's body is adorned with mesmerizing patterns—Fairy Slide, Bird Nest Robbers and Ship and Bridge—seamlessly blended into a single continuous scene of orange, blue, red and green. Fairy Slide presents a sycamore tree transformed into a playful slide, with fantastical imps and fairies in motion. Bird Nest Robbers features an egg-filled nest surrounded by surreal figures and a descending Feng Hwang bird, while Ship and Bridge depict a tranquil bridge and ship amidst whimsical creatures. The cover is equally enchanting, with a White Pagodas pattern gracing its interior, depicting serene pagodas and reflective waters, while the exterior showcases fairy creatures and sycamore leaves. The mother-of-pearl lustred interior of the pot, adorned with scattered gilt blossoms, adds a layer of luxurious intricacy.
Daisy Makeig-Jones, a prominent designer for Wedgwood in the early 20th century, revolutionized the brand with her Fairyland Lustre series, which was introduced in 1915 and brought fantastic imagery into high-end ceramics. This Malfrey pot, with its vibrant glaze and imaginative motifs, exemplifies her ability to blend the ethereal and the opulent. Such items are highly sought after by collectors and are celebrated as pinnacles of ceramic artistry.
