THE LUXURY HUB, January 2011--

Earlier this month, Switzerland-based luxury group Richemont had warned that the first quarter of 2011 could prove challenging for the jewellery industry. The group is known for exercising caution, so many in the industry brushed off the warning. At the same time, whether or not Richemont's predictions turn out to be true, collectors, connoisseurs and moneyed jewellery enthusiasts are not likely to give pink diamonds a miss.

On 7 December last year, auction house Christie's put under the hammer a modified rectangular-cut purple-pink diamond. The 6.89 carat diamond from New York Jewels sold for a whopping $6.91 million. This month another desirable pink diamond is up for sale. The venue is M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans. The piece in question is the famous Cassel Pink Diamond.

Cassel Pink

English banker and financial advisor to the royal family, Sir Ernest Cassel owned the pink diamond which has subsequently been named after him. The purplish-pink diamond is of 4.71 carats and is an extremely rare specimen. The Cassel Pink Diamond is GIA certified Fancy Purple Pink with a clarity of SI2. The famous diamond is set in a ring with .79 carats of pink diamonds in 18K rose gold. The diamond which dates back to approximately 1900 AD is priced at $1.4 million.

A second diamond worth $1.3 million is also up for sale at M.S. Rau Antiques. This is the cushion-cut ‘Natural Fancy Light Pink' diamond ring of 10.02 carats. Like the Cassel Pink Diamond, this too is surrounded by pink diamonds and is set in 18K rose gold. Pink certainly seems to be the colour of the season.
