A soft green sea meets a pale, misty shoreline beneath a radiant sky, creating a composition filled with light and serenity. At left, a modest structure rests below a wooded hillside, while two small figures along the coastal path lend a sense of scale. Executed with loose, atmospheric pastel strokes and a restrained palette, the composition evokes the fleeting effects of sea, light and air with remarkable sensitivity.
Though never an official member of the Impressionist circle, Raffaëlli exhibited alongside the group in 1880 and 1881 at the invitation of his friend Edgar Degas. Briefly trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme before pursuing an independent artistic path, he developed a distinctive style that bridged Realism, Naturalism and Impressionism. Awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1889, Raffaëlli enjoyed widespread acclaim during his lifetime, and today his works are held in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
