J.E. Caldwell & Co., founded in 1839 in Philadelphia, became one of America’s most prominent jewelry retailers, known for its elegant Art Nouveau and Art Deco creations. Originally supplying European jewelry, silver and objets d’art to affluent Philadelphians, Caldwell soon developed a reputation for beautifully crafted American jewels. By the late 19th century, the firm was creating finely chased, gem-set Art Nouveau pieces and later embraced bold Art Deco styles. A celebrated exhibitor at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, J.E. Caldwell played a pivotal role in shaping American taste in fine jewelry.
