This exceptional oil by French artist Jean-Gabriel Domergue captures the bustling atmosphere and sophisticated onlookers at a lively horse race. With its luminous palette and energetic brushwork, At the Races is a stunning example of Domergue's mastery.
Renowned for his alluring portraits of elegant socialites, this work renders not one, but three of Domergue's iconic, fashionable women enjoying the event, adorned in elaborate attire and accompanied by equally dapper gentlemen. His virtuosic brushwork adds remarkable movement to the composition, perfectly evoking the energy of the race without depicting any horses or riders. The audience takes center stage here, drawing the viewer into their mesmerizing orbit of glamour and high society.
Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was only 17 years old when he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français for the first time, winning the Prix du Rome in 1911 and a gold medal in 1920. While landscapes dominated his early oeuvre, Domergue's focus shifted in the 1920s to what would become his trademark subject, la belle Parisienne. As "the inventory of the pin-up," he enjoyed a tremendously successful career. From 1955 until 1962, he was the curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, organizing exhibitions of the works of van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Goya, among others. Domergue was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and also served as a Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts.
