Satsuma earthenware, a hallmark of Meiji period artistry, has captivated collectors for over 150 years. First crafted in the 17th century, it developed its distinctive style—featuring overglaze enamel and gilded details—by around 1790. Early designs predominantly showcased natural themes, particularly floral and animal motifs, with human and architectural elements becoming more prevalent in the 19th century.
Originating near Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu Island, Satsuma ware was initially produced by Korean potters for the Shimazu family and local communities. Its popularity soared after being exhibited at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. This international exposure fueled demand from Western markets, leading to production expansion in major Japanese cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo and Yokohama. The continued patronage of the Shimazu family further cemented Satsuma ware's global appeal and enduring success.
