Among the rarest of all tourmalines, canary yellow tourmalines were only recently discovered in Malawi in 2000. While tourmalines are celebrated as a “gemstone of the rainbow” for the incredible array of colors in which they are found, yellow stones remain elusive. The brilliant jewels of Malawi in East Africa contain fine traces of magnesium, which produce this highly sought-after radiant lemon hue. Large yellow tourmalines such as this one are even rarer. Only about 10% of these stones found are of gemstone quality; of these, only 5% weigh more than one carat.
