Elephant Stampede Tapestry

Handwoven silk tapestry, edition 63 of 88

A bold fusion of artistry and craftsmanship, this Elephant Stampede tapestry by LeRoy Neiman captures the raw power and grandeur of the animal kingdom. Handwoven in 100% silk by world-renowned artisans in China, this rare limited-edition tapestry was released in 1988 in an edition of just 88 works. Weighing approximately 16 pounds, its luxurious texture and vibrant palette bring Neiman’s signature expressionist energy to life in textile form. Signed by the artist on the reverse label, this extraordinary work is a testament to Neiman’s enduring legacy.

Neiman’s fascination with exotic wildlife is evident in this dynamic composition. Charging elephants, rendered in bold, sweeping strokes and an explosion of color, command the scene, embodying both movement and majesty. The intense hues and expressive lines create a sense of urgency, drawing the viewer into the heart of the stampede. Throughout his career, Neiman was captivated by the natural world, frequently portraying big cats, elephants and horses in his work. His travels through Africa’s sweeping plains inspired many of his wildlife compositions, where he effectively captured the spirit and vitality of the safari through his art.

Born in 1921, LeRoy Neiman studied art after serving in WWII, first at the St. Paul School of Art and later at the Art Institute of Chicago. His work serves as a time capsule of post-war America, capturing the energy of sports, entertainment and luxury culture amid rapid technological and media expansion. Influenced by Pollock and de Kooning, Neiman fused expressionism with pop and sports imagery, creating vibrantly colored paintings, screenprints and the occasional tapestry of athletes, musicians and major events. In addition, his long association with Playboy magazine contributed to his status as a cultural icon, celebrated for art that was both technically masterful and widely beloved.
