Among the most captivating scientific instruments of 19th-century France, this exceptionally rare Pendule Cosmographique or Cosmographic Clock unites the arts of globe-making and horology in a single object. Bearing the prestigious stamp of Maison Delamarche—the most celebrated globe maker in French history—and the clockwork mechanism of maker Mouret, this timepiece represents the apex of Parisian scientific craftsmanship.
The clock is anchored by an 8-inch terrestrial globe composed of twelve finely printed and hand-colored maps depicting the world's geography and borders, as they were understood in the late 19th century. The globe rotates on its axis above a complex clock mechanism. A transparent horizontal calendar ring and scrolling brass supports frame a meridian circle and calendar pointer, while the exposed skeleton timepiece below features a white enamel dial with Roman numerals and elegant blued steel hands—all resting upon a polished ebonized base.
Charles-François Delamarche was the first globe maker in France to successfully bring terrestrial globe production to a broad public, perfecting the design of small globes suited for both scientific and decorative use. His firm, Maison Delamarche of the rue de Serpente, Paris, quickly rose to dominate the French globe-making industry. Upon his death, his son Félix assumed leadership in 1817, sustaining the house's reputation for exactitude and elegance. That legacy endured well into the late 19th century, when the firm produced works such as this—objects that stand as monuments to the supremacy of science, geography and the decorative arts in Napoleon III's Second Empire.
Louis-Jérôme-Napoléon Mouret (1810–1877) was a court clerk by profession and an astronomer by passion. Over twenty-two years, he perfected the Cosmographic Clock as a teaching instrument—a testament to obsessive ingenuity. In the year of his death, the celebrated astronomer Camille Flammarion published a presentation of the instrument in the prestigious scientific journal La Nature. A similar example of this very clock is on view at the Camille Flammarion Observatory in France.
