Oil on canvas

An archetype of Belle Époque sophistication, La Parisienne captures the fashionable modern woman who became Jean Béraud’s defining subject. Elegant, self-possessed and impeccably dressed, the solitary figure embodies the refinement of late 19th-century Paris. La Parisienne

The intimate scale heightens the painting’s immediacy, transforming a fleeting encounter into a compelling portrait of Parisian life.

The woman stands confidently against a soft neutral background, commanding attention in her fitted bodice, high collar and cinched waist. Her gloves, handbag and closed parasol are all emblematic of the Parisian women who embraced style and sophistication in their rapidly modernizing world. Béraud punctuates the restrained palette with delicate touches of pink and red across her face, drawing attention to her direct gaze and poised expression.

Béraud was among the most perceptive chroniclers of Paris during the Belle Époque. Trained under celebrated portraitist Léon Bonnat, he became renowned for his observant portrayals of the city’s grand boulevards, theaters, cafés and fashionable society. His paintings balance exacting detail with a sense of spontaneity, preserving the changing rhythms, fashions and personalities of modern Paris with remarkable vitality.

The painting is accompanied by a 1999 opinion from the Wildenstein Institute stating that it will be included in a supplement to the artist’s catalogue raisonné.
