A remarkable surviving example of Tiffany’s early furniture work, this chair is a stunning marriage of sculptural carving, exotic ornament and technical ingenuity.
The chair’s design is a tour de force of Tiffany’s experimentation with surface and ornament. The crest rail is carved with elaborate floral motifs modeled after Japanese ivory inro, while the frame is ornamented with thousands of minute squares of multicolored wood, each set within fine metal borders to create a dazzling micromosaic effect. This technique, described in 1893 in The Decorator and Furnisher as “an entirely new method of work,” recalls cloisonné enamels and Indian wood mosaics imported by Tiffany’s partner, Lockwood de Forest. The plush velvet seat is supported by reeded legs that terminate in Tiffany’s iconic brass claw and glass ball feet.
Originally part of a suite of four chairs and a matching library table, this chair is also similar to an important group of Tiffany furniture now in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts and the Cleveland Museum of Art. This body of furniture work is likely connected to Tiffany and Samuel Colman’s 1891 commission for Henry Osborne and Louisine Havemeyer, among the most significant patrons of 19th-century American art.
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s first foray into interior design began with the firm Louis C. Tiffany & Associated Artists (1881–83), founded with Candace Wheeler, Lockwood de Forest and Samuel Colman. Together they introduced a distinctly American decorative style that blended Near Eastern, Japanese and natural motifs with innovative craftsmanship. By the 1890s, Tiffany reorganized the venture as Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company, expanding his experiments in wood, metal and mosaic to furniture design. This chair is an early and exceptionally rare example of Tiffany’s groundbreaking ambition to unite art, nature and craftsmanship across every element of his designs.
