This exceptional French armchair exemplifies the sculptural richness and historic craftsmanship that define the Napoleon III period. Executed circa 1850, the chair is attributed to the Parisian atelier Veuve Meunier, a respected maker active during the height of the Second Empire. Combining bold carving with refined proportions, the armchair reflects the era’s fascination with Renaissance and classical sources, interpreted through a distinctly mid-nineteenth-century luxury.
The chair is carved in richly toned mahogany and distinguished by its commanding silhouette and abundant ornament. A shaped oval back is framed by scrolling foliage and acanthus motifs, while the deeply modeled arms terminate in expressive carved lion heads that flow into fluted supports. Blue upholstery heightens the contrast with the deep wood. The seat rests on robust legs ending in finely articulated ball-and-paw feet, a motif drawn from earlier classical precedents and revived with dramatic flair.
