Native American Stepping into a Canoe

Inscribed “C Kauba” and “GESCHUTZT”
Bronze

This iconic bronze sculpture was crafted by Carl Kauba, one of the greatest depictors of the Old West. The sculpture features a Native American man stepping into an ornately carved canoe. Kauba’s sculpture captures the subject in motion with astonishing life-like accuracy, taking care to render the figure in historically accurate Native clothes and regalia.

Born the son of an Austrian shoe cobbler, Kauba was inspired as a boy by Wild West adventure stories, especially those of German author Carl May. Kauba's realistic statues illustrate a passionate interest in the life and the cultural traditions of Native Americans. Kauba was an avid collector of historical photographs and artifacts related to rough riders, cavalry and Native Americans. Carl Kauba's sculptures are renowned for their rich attention to detail, with care taken to render the minute embellishments of everything from feathered headdresses to distinctive weapons and even different types of horse reins. Kauba’s skill in the medium is widely regarded and for many collectors, Kauba’s works are considered in the same echelon as those of Remington and Russell. Today, Kauba's work can be found in important collections such as The Smithsonian American Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago.
