Pair of Terrestrial and Celestial Globes
G & T London
20th Century

This extraordinary pair of 32-inch terrestrial and celestial globes, crafted by G & T London, pays homage to the masterpieces of Vincenzo Coronelli, the most renowned cartographer of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. With a commanding 32-inch diameter, these globes are among the largest library globes of their kind, offering a grand canvas for their highly detailed, hand-painted maps. Together, they encapsulate the spirit of exploration and discovery that defined the Enlightenment.

The terrestrial globe is a rich tapestry of historical and topographical knowledge. Its oceans feature elaborate cartouches, detailed maritime routes and beautiful illustrations of ships, sea creatures and historical notes. Explorers' tracks are precisely charted with dates and annotations, while depictions of wildlife, inhabitants and architecture reflect the cultural and natural diversity of the known world circa 1700. The inclusion of California as an island exemplifies the period's cartographic misconceptions, offering a fascinating glimpse into the evolving understanding of the globe.

The celestial globe mirrors the terrestrial with its meticulous artistry and scientific accuracy. It showcases the constellations as imagined during Coronelli’s time, blending classical mythology with astronomical precision. Graduated circles—equatorial, tropic and polar—along with the ecliptic and colures, provide a framework for observing the stars, while individual constellations, clusters and comets are labeled with detailed notes.

Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650–1718) was a Venetian monk and cartographer whose unparalleled globes were commissioned by royalty, including Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. His work remains a benchmark in cartography, with many of his original globes preserved in major institutions such as the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the British Library in London. Coronelli’s legacy extends beyond his maps, as he founded the world’s first geographical society and remains a monumental influence on generations of explorers and scholars.
