Wine Flagons, Set of 2
John Moore
Hallmarked London, 1766

These handsome Georgian silver flagons epitomize the era's taste for refined design. Impressive in size yet still elegant in form, the 18th-century vessels stand tall as functional works of art that would have been used to pour wine during the finest feasts.

Large silver drinking receptacles such as these were highly sought-after during this time when wine and beer were more common than water. Such a sophisticated pair with its dramatic scrolled handles could only have been made by an expert craftsman such as John Moore. Moore was a prominent English silversmith active in the 19th century, particularly known for his high-quality silverware. He was associated with the firm of John Hunt and Robert Roskell, a prestigious London-based company renowned for its exquisite silver and jewelry. The firm of Hunt & Roskell, originally established as Paul Storr & Co., evolved through various partnerships before becoming Hunt & Roskell in 1843.

The flagons bear the coat of arms of the prominent Frost family, encircled in intricately etched floral motifs. More recently, these magnificent flagons were once part of the iconic Red McCombs Collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
