Oil on canvas

French artist Jean-Louis Lefort captures the bustling streets of Paris on a grand scale in this vibrant oil on canvas, entitled Place de la Trinité, Paris. The subject is the historic Église de la Sainte-Trinité in the heart of Paris’ 9th arrondissement on a blustery fall day. Lefort depicts the historic thoroughfare at the height of the day, as vehicles and pedestrians alike traverse streets under the golden glow of the afternoon sun.

Lefort masterfully renders the imposing facade of Sainte-Trinité against a blue sky punctuated by billowing clouds. Built under the reign of Emperor Napoleon III, Sainte-Trinité’s ornate exterior towers over the square and city streets, bustling with cars and pedestrians alike. The artist’s attention to detail and effusive brushstrokes heighten the highly dynamic cityscape. The setting chosen by Lefort offered a wealth of inspiration to artists throughout history, including Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who rendered his Place de la Trinité in 1875.

Born in Bordeaux, Jean-Louis Lefort completed his artistic studies in Paris, where he initially gained prominence as a watercolor painter of the iconic urban landscape. Lefort exhibited widely in Paris, including at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon of the Société des Aquarellistes Français, of which he was a committee member. Also counted as a Chevalier in the prestigious Légion d’Honneur, Lefort’s work remains prized among private collectors.
