Roman Emperor Valens (328–378 CE) was a significant figure in late Roman history, known primarily for his role in the turbulent events of the 4th century. He ruled as the Eastern Roman Emperor from 364 until his death in 378, sharing power with his brother Valentinian I, who ruled the Western Empire. Valens is best remembered for his tragic defeat at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 CE, a pivotal event in Roman history. The battle, fought against the Visigoths, ended in a catastrophic loss for the Romans, and Valens himself perished on the battlefield. This defeat exposed the vulnerability of the Roman Empire to barbarian invasions and is often regarded as a precursor to the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire.
