This rare and wonderful English gilt sterling “bridal cup” by English silversmiths George Lambert and William Summers carries a beloved tradition in silvermaking. The Victorian cup is in the form of a woman holding a small pivoting cup aloft with her skirt forming a larger cup below. Also known as “wager cups,” the jungfrauenbecher, originated in Germany in the 16th century and was used at wedding feasts so that the bride and groom could drink simultaneously. The cup is said to have originated when a goldsmith was challenged to create a cup from which two people could drink at the same time without spilling a drop to win the hand of a nobleman's daughter. English examples of this traditional cup are extremely rare.
George Lambert, of Lambert & Rawlings, later known as Lambert & Co., was a renowned silversmith based in London. He held the prestigious title of "Silversmith to Their Majesties and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent," a distinction that underscored the exceptional quality of his work. Lambert earned medals at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and his creations are featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. William Summers was an esteemed goldsmith who partnered with Lambert & Rawlings and began to specialize in high-quality sterling items. This cup represents the marriage of lovers, German and English styles and two extremely gifted sterling workers all at once, in exceptional detail.
