Oil on canvas
This radiant oil is a monumental masterpiece by French artist Henry Lerolle. Celebrated for his ability to capture the idyllic beauty of Parisian life and leisure, Lerolle depicts a quiet, pastoral moment in this work, entitled The Apple Picker. He brings the scene to life with an exceptionally luminous palette and meticulous, dynamic brushwork. The effect is absolutely mesmerizing, transporting the viewer to the bucolic charm of the French countryside.
Trained under Louis Lamothe, a pupil of Ingres, Henry Lerolle developed a refined academic foundation that he blended with the Impressionist influence of his contemporaries. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, earning recognition for his command of light and color. Such large-scale masterworks as The Apple Picker are among Lerolle's finest paintings, and they are exceptionally difficult to find today.
Lerolle was at the center of the Paris art world, and his home was an important gathering place for leading artists and intellectuals of his day, including Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet. In addition to being an artist himself, Lerolle played a significant role as a collector and advocate, supporting emerging talent and fostering dialogue between the visual arts and music. Today, his works belong to the prestigious collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
