Tiffany & Co.
Circa 1892
This monumental pair of Tiffany & Co. sterling silver candelabra is an extraordinary example of the firm's legendary workmanship in its most important pattern. Weighing an astonishing 466 troy ounces, these nine-light candelabra display a remarkable level of detail that embodies the essence of the coveted Chrysanthemum pattern. Tiffany candelabra of this size and stature are exceptionally rare today, and this exceptional pair is completely fresh to market.
Statuesque yet supremely elegant, each candelabra is a tour de force of rich ornamentation. Blossoming florals cover every surface of the design, and the arms of the candelabra beautifully twist and curve like tree branches to complete the stunning naturalistic effect. Brilliantly achieving the perfect blend of organic movement and formal grandeur, these candelabra represent the height of Tiffany's excellence. The firm made objects of this magnitude only on a commission basis, since they were extremely and required the utmost skill to execute.
The Chrysanthemum pattern was first introduced in 1878 and patented on September 21, 1880 (patent no. 11968) by Charles T. Grosjean, one of the most influential silversmiths in Tiffany’s history. His designs are among the most enduring of the Tiffany patterns and include Chrysanthemum, Lap Over Edge and English King. It was Chrysanthemum, however, that found particular favor with Victorian socialites and new brides, despite the fact that it was one of the most expensive of the Tiffany patterns to produce. Today, this pattern is still celebrated as one of the most important and complex in history, and similar examples can be found in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
