Mixed-Metal Sake Form Teapot
Tiffany & Co.
Dated 1887

This exceptionally rare mixed-metal teapot is a stunning example of Tiffany & Co.'s magnificent craftsmanship and innovative designs during the firm's peak in the late 19th century. Created under the direction of the great Edward C. Moore, this teapot takes an extraordinary "sake form," inspired by Japanese aesthetics and techniques. The applied mixed-metal finishes and hammered surface were among Tiffany's most elaborate and complex methods, making this stunning teapot an incredibly rare treasure.

A celebration of nature's beauty, the body of this teapot is exquisitely decorated with whimsical flora and fauna, including hanging gourds, scrolling vines and shimmering butterflies. The handle is delicately adorned with gold Asian-inspired cloud motifs that float above the entire design, and a remarkably minute butterfly accents the copper knob on the pot's cover. Each detail is masterfully rendered, embodying the height of Tiffany & Co.'s Japanese-style creations.

Such labor-intensive mixed-metal techniques required the highest level of skill, and only a small number of objects like this were ever made by Tiffany & Co. Most were crafted as showcases for major international exhibitions, and surviving examples mostly reside in major institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

Marked "Tiffany & Co." with date letter "M" for the directorship of Edward C. Moore
