This extraordinary Tiffany Studios Laburnum floor lamp stands among the rarest and most celebrated designs ever conceived by the firm. With its cascading clusters of golden-yellow blossoms, the shade perfectly captures the signature drapery of this flower, set against a stunning array of deep blues and rich green foliage. The Laburnum lamp epitomizes the splendor of Tiffany’s finest floral designs.
This design is singular within Tiffany’s oeuvre—no other shade uses this unique undulating form, with the laburnum blooms in high relief and the leaves in low relief. Its stunning, irregular border was exceptionally difficult to execute, and was only employed strategically in a few designs to render this distinctive hanging flower. Tiffany loved and cultivated laburnum at his sprawling estate, Laurelton Hall, and this lamp is a testament to his unparalleled ability to transform his admiration of nature into extraordinary glass creations.
The Laburnum shade’s design is attributed to the visionary Clara Driscoll, circa 1900. Driscoll was appointed head of the Women's Glass Cutting Department at Tiffany Studios in 1892, and she was responsible for some of the most sought-after and commercially successful designs in the firm's history, including the Dragonfly, Wisteria and Poppy. By 1904, Driscoll had won medals at international expositions for her designs and was one of the highest-paid women in America.
Tiffany lamps such as this are one of the great icons of the American decorative arts, representing Louis Comfort Tiffany's seemingly limitless creativity and endless quest for beauty. Similar examples of this Laburnum lamp reside in important museum collections such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
