Venise, Le Grand Canal

Signed and dated "Jean Dufy 29” (lower center)
Oil on canvas

The energy and joie de vivre of Venice has been captured in this vibrant oil on canvas by the painter Jean Dufy. The French master traveled to Italy extensively throughout his career, composing scenes of Venice’s most famous monuments and vibrant streets. Here, he captures the Grand Canal, the bustling main “street” of the legendary City of Water. Dufy's avant-garde use of movement and color breathes life into the vivacious scene, which displays the bright fluidity for which he is celebrated.

Painted during an important time of his career, Dufy’s Venise, Le Grand Canal showcases a richness of color and composition. The painting was rendered with a burst of intense color, with brilliant blues layered against reds and earth tones. The artist’s daring use of unblended color reflects his association with the Fauves, a 20th-century artistic group that was famed for its bold and even aggressive use of color. Highly stylized, his subjects traverse the foreground, adding energy and dynamism to the scene. This masterpiece is exemplary of Dufy's highly original and coveted style.

Born in Le Havre, Normandy, both Dufy and his famous older brother Raoul showed a talent for drawing at an early age. After his military service, he moved to Paris in 1912, eventually befriending key members of the French avant-garde, including Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. For 30 years, Dufy also worked as a painter on porcelain at the famous ateliers of Théodore Haviland in Limoges, France, winning a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1923. He frequently exhibited his painted works throughout Paris and the United States, and today they can be found in numerous museums throughout the world, including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art.
