Verträumter Tag
(Dreamy Day)

Signed "A. Jawlensky" (lower left) and dated "1956" (lower right)
Oil on board

This vibrant landscape, Verträumter Tag (Dreamy Day), exemplifies Andreas Jawlensky's mastery of explosive color and expressive brushwork, combining the vivid palette of the Fauves with the emotional intensity of German Expressionism. The luminous composition captures the essence of a sun-drenched countryside through bold chromatic contrasts and dynamic compositional elements, demonstrating Jawlensky's evolution beyond his father's artistic legacy into his own distinctive voice.

The painting bursts with intensity as golden yellows dominate the rolling hills, punctuated by brilliant oranges and deep purples that create a sense of atmospheric depth. A solitary tree anchors the center of the composition, its dark trunk contrasting with the luminous landscape. The artist's confident brushstrokes create texture, while the interplay of warm and cool tones establishes a visual rhythm that guides the viewer's eye through the landscape.

Born in 1902 in the Vitebsk Governorate, Jawlensky was destined to be an artist. He began to paint in his father's studio at the young age of just four, and his father, the great Russian expressionist painter Alexej Georgewitsch von Jawlensky, continued to shape young Andreas' early career. Later, encountering the work of Vincent van Gogh, Jawlensky developed a style all his own. Capturing the Russian people and landscape with a vibrant palette and flattened planes, his work remains an exceptional example of modern Russian art.
