Visage No. 202
Earthenware ceramic and paint
Created in 1963 at the Madoura studio in Vallauris, Visage No. 202 exemplifies Pablo Picasso’s imaginative and expressive approach to ceramic portraiture. Executed in painted and glazed white earthenware, this circular plate transforms a utilitarian object into a vibrant, sculptural canvas. The work demonstrates Picasso’s unmatched ability to fuse spontaneity with structure, translating the human face into a field of color, rhythm and form.
At its center, a rounded expanse of blue defines the visage, animated by bold black brows and circular eyes that radiate both humor and intensity. A white-and-red vertical stripe forms the nose, while green and yellow enliven the cheeks and a curved mouth in brown and red lends a wry, emotive expression. Framing the composition, rhythmic black brushstrokes encircle the rim, uniting the surface in movement and balance. The result is a compelling synthesis of color and gesture that reflects Picasso’s lifelong pursuit of expressive simplicity.
Picasso’s collaboration with the Madoura Pottery beginning in 1946 marked one of the most prolific and inventive chapters of his career. Working alongside Suzanne and Georges Ramié, the artist produced more than 600 ceramic editions, each merging fine art with craftsmanship in revolutionary ways. Today, his Madoura works are represented in major collections worldwide, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
