Red ceramic medallion

In Visage, Pablo Picasso transforms a small red clay medallion into an intimate study of form and expression. Created in 1954 during his collaboration with the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris, the work reveals the artist’s exceptional ability to animate the simplest material with sculptural vitality.

The irregularly shaped medallion bears a boldly incised face—its features defined by a few decisive strokes. Eyes peer from beneath heavy brows, while a long, prominent nose and a compact mouth emerge from the clay’s surface. The lower section is animated by sweeping, rhythmic lines that suggest a beard or chin, giving the composition a lively sense of movement. The directness of the carving imparts an immediacy that feels both ancient and distinctly modern.

Picasso’s collaboration with the Madoura Pottery beginning in 1946 marked one of the most prolific and inventive chapters of his career. Working alongside Suzanne and Georges Ramié, the artist produced more than 600 ceramic editions, each merging fine art with craftsmanship in revolutionary ways. Today, his Madoura works are represented in major collections worldwide, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

Stamped Madoura Empreinte Originale de Picasso and numbered 109/500 on the reverse.
