France’s recognition of Winston Churchill’s wartime leadership provides the historical backdrop to this signed letter to his close friend Odette Pol-Roger. Written from La Pausa at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on October 24, 1958, the correspondence refers to the forthcoming presentation of the Croix de la Libération, or Cross of Liberation, by Charles de Gaulle. The honor recognized Churchill’s distinguished service to Free France during the Second World War.
Addressing his recipient as “My dear Odette,” Churchill expresses pleasure at learning that her husband’s health has improved. Odette Pol-Roger, the wife of Jacques Pol-Roger of the celebrated French Champagne house, was a cherished friend with whom he maintained a warm correspondence. He gently explains that de Gaulle, who was then France's Prime Minister, would hold the presentation privately, adding, “it is very kind of you to wish to come.” His affectionate closing, “Hoping to see you soon,” reflects their enduring friendship. The typed letter bears his handwritten subscription and signature and is framed with its accompanying envelope addressed to Madame Pol Roger in Épernay.
On November 6, 1958, de Gaulle presented Churchill with the Cross of Liberation at the Hôtel Matignon in Paris. During the ceremony, he recognized Churchill as a companion in France’s liberation, “in honor and through victory.” The occasion acknowledged the enduring significance of their wartime alliance and served as France’s tribute to one of its foremost allies.
