M.S. Rau: New Orleans Antique Shopping at its Best
BLUEGREEN COLORFUL PLACES, March 2011--
Want to make a Bluegreen vacation all about the antiques?
The French Quarter in New Orleans has 17 antique shops. Some 12 of the 17 shops can be found on Royal Street. Royal Street is known as the refined and elegant epicenter of New Orleans' artistic culture. Its mix of classic antique shops and boutiques, high-end jewelry stores, eclectic and classic art galleries and world-class hotels and restaurants keeps both locals and tourists continually coming to the area.
The French Quarter's classic architecture, with buildings dating back to the 18th and early 19th Centuries is a perfect host for antiques. Shops include Brass Monkey, Cass-Garr Company, French Antique Shop and M.S. Rau Antiques. This street was named the "World's Best Street for Antiquing" by the Travel Channel. One cannot-miss shop is M.S. Rau Antiques. This nearly century old antique shop encompasses what New Orleans and the Vieux Carre are all about-history and culture.
As the largest antique retailer in North America, M.S. Rau's 4,500 square feet is filled with some of the most unique and beautiful antique furniture, artwork and jewelry. You will find dining room furniture from around the world, ornamented with gold, ivory, ebony or marble from the 19th Century - all in impeccable condition. You can find Buccellati necklaces and broaches, stunning pieces that showcase ornate, yet intricate pierced gold pendants with diamond inlays. And keep your eyes open for the perfect painting. From French impressionism to modern American realism, M.S. Rau has a little something for every art lover.
Today, Bill Rau runs M.S. Rau antiques. As the third generation heir to this incredible New Orleans antique shop, his knowledge and passion for the trade has been well groomed over the years. And it shows. As the eldest antique establishment in New Orleans, this shop's artifacts and novelties, as well as its friendly, knowledgeable associates, will turn anyone into an antique lover.
M.S. Rau is located at 630 Royal Street (where all the other antique stores are), and open from 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m., Monday through Saturday. M.S. Rau is about a 10-minute walk from Bluegreen Club La Pension, on Decatur Street. If you prefer to drive, the trip is only two minutes. But, just a reminder, walking will give you more time to see the views of Historic New Orleans.
