Hester Bateman Silver: The Legacy of a Remarkable Silversmith

Hester Bateman was one of the most successful and influential silversmiths of the 18th century. Known as the “Queen of English Silversmiths,” she created elegant and refined silverware for the growing middle class of Georgian England. Her work is admired for its simplicity, delicacy and quality, as well as its innovative use of machines and techniques.

At M.S. Rau, we are delighted to offer a fine selection of Hester Bateman silver, including rare and vintage pieces that showcase her mastery and style. Whether you are looking for a teapot, a salver, a sugar bowl, a salt cellar, a wine label or a pair of candlesticks, you will find your next great treasure in our Hester Bateman collection.

Hester Bateman was born in London in 1708 to an impoverished family. She married John Bateman, a goldsmith and chain maker, in 1732 and had six children. After her husband’s death in 1760, she took over his workshop and registered her own mark at the Goldsmith’s Hall in 1761. She ran the business with the help of her sons Peter and Jonathan until her retirement in 1790.

Hester Bateman specialized in household silverware in a neo-classical style, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art. Not only did Bateman adhere to time-honored silversmithing techniques, she also introduced new forms and designs, such as the navette-shaped tea caddy, the boat-shaped salt cellar and the oval milk jug.

Hester Bateman silver is not only beautiful, but also meaningful. Each piece tells a story of craftsmanship, family and culture that spans generations. Hester Bateman silver is also a symbol of excellence and prestige, collected by connoisseurs and museums around the world.
