"I call what I do psychological Cubism.” —George Condo

This rare early work by the famed American artist George Condo proves why he is one of the most influential visionaries in contemporary painting. Demonstrating his mastery of vibrant expressionism, American Cancer is a compelling composition that also reveals the influence of Condo’s illustrious circle of friends and mentors, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.

This dynamic canvas is an important marker of Condo's New York City roots. Painted in 1981, the work dates from the period when Condo famously worked with Warhol at The Factory, while rising in the ranks of the bustling East Village art scene. Like his fellow artistic luminaries, Condo worked to capture the essence of his historical moment—a period of great social and political transformation that was at the same time bursting with new artistic energy. Coining the term “artificial realism” for his unique style, Condo used an energetic bravado, saturated color palette and feverish brushwork to capture the sensation of American life as he knew it, all evident in this electric composition.

Like his friend Basquiat, Condo became known for his bold visual language that weaves a kaleidoscope of jazz, pop culture and art history into engrossing compositions. American Cancer exudes an electrifying presence, with a swirling array of figures and geometric forms coalescing into a colorful crescendo. There are recognizable references to the American flag and map, urban architecture and the traditional female nude, but Condo purposefully obscures a logical narrative to instead evoke the dizzying experience of the American metropolis.

Known for his provocative canvases and genre-defying collaborations with greats such as William S. Burroughs, Condo has created a one-of-a-kind oeuvre that knows no bounds. His iconic works are collected by major American institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he has also been the subject of several monographs and highly acclaimed retrospectives at the New Museum in New York and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

American Impressionism: American Art in a New Light

Like its French inspiration, American Impressionism sought to capture the fleeting emotion of the moment on canvas through the use of light-filled palettes and painterly brushstrokes. Today, these works are revered among the...
