Circa 1930

This exceptionally rare Art Deco gentleman’s dressing table, or barbière, was created by Lyonnais designer Théodore Chanut circa 1930. Remarkably sophisticated, the table combines polished wood, finely worked bronze ornament and an ingenious arrangement of concealed storage compartments. A folding mirror rises from the stepped top, making the cabinet a complete personal grooming station.

Four elegantly tapered legs support the rounded cabinet, whose curved front is adorned with finely detailed bronze panels and delicate polychrome accents. Their dreamlike garden scenes depict elegantly dressed figures among flowering plants, trees, birds and a fountain, lending the table the character of a jewel-like work of decorative art.

Théodore Chanut was a decorator, cabinetmaker, ceramist and master metalworker specializing in dinanderie, the art of shaping and ornamenting metal by hand. A former student of the celebrated designer Georges Hoentschel, Chanut established his workshop in Lyon and became known for furnishings that united refined cabinetry with sculptural metalwork.
