Executed in November 1958, Autumn in Saleggio beautifully depicts a Swiss landscape by Andreas Jawlensky, the son of the famed "Russian Matisse," Alexej von Jawlensky. The work dates to the beginning of the artist’s Ticino period, following his 1956 move to Locarno. Depicting Saleggio in the lower Maggia Valley, the composition is an exceptional example of Jawlensky’s mature Expressionist vision.
Seen from a hill, brightly painted houses anchor the foreground while dense bands of foliage ascend toward a sunlit hillside. Jawlensky concentrates autumn’s signature hues at the center of the composition, where trees blaze in orange, gold, coral and violet against deep blue-green vegetation. Thick, vigorous brushstrokes keep the work in motion, while the village and surrounding landscape draw the viewer into the grandeur of the Swiss landscape.
Born in Russia in 1902, Andreas Jawlensky was the only son of celebrated Expressionist Alexej von Jawlensky and grew up within the artistic world of the European avant-garde. Although closely connected to his father’s legacy, he developed a distinct practice centered on landscapes and still lifes. His move to Locarno marked a profound artistic renewal, and the abundant vegetation, hillside villages and brilliant light of Ticino became central to his later work.
