Blue Circles Stained Glass Window
John La Farge
Circa 1887

Brilliant in both color and conception, this stained glass window exemplifies the ingenuity and artistry of John La Farge, among the most influential figures in late 19th-century American art. Its radiant, jewel-toned palette and precise geometric design reflect La Farge’s pioneering experiments with light and color—innovations that established him as one of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s foremost contemporaries and creative rivals.

This window was likely commissioned for St. Paul’s Universalist Church in Chicago, a celebrated site for La Farge’s stained glass before its demolition in 1963. Distinct for its absence of overt religious imagery, the work embodies the humanist ideals central to Unitarian philosophy, inviting viewers to appreciate the expressive, purely visual qualities of glass as an artistic medium.

La Farge was among the first American artists to elevate stained glass to the realm of fine art. Rejecting the limitations of painted glass, he pioneered and patented techniques using layered opalescent glass to achieve remarkable depth, luminosity and texture. Along with Louis Comfort Tiffany, La Farge was a transformative force in the art of glassmaking and ushered in a distinctly American aesthetic during the Gilded Age. His stained glass masterpieces are held today in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
